powerful piece ❤️ “how do we deal with the loss of a loved one when they are still alive? ” – brings me back to taking care of my father until the day he passed…

Thanks Lin, I have asked myself this question many times and hope I will be up to the task if as Jesus said “The cup cannot pass from my lips.”

Thanks, John, sweet story. Although for me, I try to limit my time spent living in the past, and focus more on living in the present and planning the future, what will I do today, what do I need to accomplish my goals for tomorrow, next week, etc. I see myself running out of time and want to use that remaining time as productively as possible. Every day I appreciate more that life is such a gift.

Thanks Dennis for a different perspective. I am often torn between thinking about the past as in “those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it” and thinking about living in the present. I think I probably spend more time thinking about the future, what little I probably have left. I always enjoyed the days when I was more dedicated to following Zen practices but that is the past and I doubt I could or would go back there. John

I agree the past can be very instructive in reminding us to lead a more wholesome life by remembering and then not repeating unwholesome behaviors. Balance here is important, right? If I spend all day in front of a window immersed in my past life, that is my choice, but is that taking full advantage of the gift of life? No, I don’t think so. Maybe it is an escape from life? If so, that is a whole different story.

Hard to say what life is like for a person with severe dementia. I can only assume that at some point in life we may give up looking at the future or even present. But then maybe that is true for some people and not for others. I see lots of people without dementia who seem to be living in the past. One might say it is almost normal for many to live in the past.
